It is easy to understand the appeal. You see glossy adverts promising dental implants at a fraction of the cost you might expect to pay in the UK. The sun is shining, the clinic looks modern, and the price is much less than you have been quoted locally. So why would you not fly out, fix your smile, and enjoy a bit of a holiday while you are at it?
We speak to patients every year at the Rushey Green Dental Practice who have considered this option. Some even travel overseas for treatment, hoping to save money or avoid long waiting lists. But sadly, we also see patients who come back with complications, some of them very serious, that end up costing far more in pain, time, and money than they expected.
Dental implants are a life-changing treatment. They replace missing teeth with fixed, natural-looking alternatives that function just like the real thing. But they also require a medical procedure that requires precision, care, and long-term attention. It is not something to be rushed or done on the cheap.
Let us take a look then, at why opting for cheap dental implants abroad is unlikely to be worth it.
Many overseas clinics use marketing campaigns and patient coordinators to sell the treatment. Everything feels streamlined and modern. But what you often lose in that process is personal care.
You may not meet the person who will be performing your surgery until you arrive. Sometimes you do not get a chance to talk through your medical history in detail. When that happens, important things can be missed, things that affect your suitability for implants for example.
When you have a consultation at our Catford dental practice, we don’t just talk about what you want, but also check your bone thickness and density and any other issues that could negatively affect any implants that are placed.
We also take the time to walk you through what to expect, answer any questions you might have, and help you make the right choice.
Implants are small, but they are not simple. They have to be made from strong, biocompatible materials that work long-term in your jawbone.
In the UK and other regulated areas, all implant systems must meet strict medical standards. We know where they are made, how they are tested, and how they perform over time.
Overseas, especially in clinics that advertise aggressively, you may not get the same guarantee. Some clinics use cheaper implant systems that do not last as long or integrate properly with the bone. If the implant fails, it can mean bone damage, infection, or the need for complex reconstruction.
Dental implants are not a one-day treatment. They involve several phases, sometimes spread across months. There is healing time, checking for proper integration, placing the abutments and crowns, and adjusting your bite. Each step is important.
When treatment is done overseas, you often get very limited follow-up care. Once you are home, you are largely on your own. If something feels wrong, whether that be pain, swelling or loosening, you can’t just pop back to the clinic.
We have seen patients who were left to find their own dentist when things went wrong. Many UK practices will not take over treatment mid-way, especially if they do not know the implant system or if it does not meet local standards. That leaves patients in a difficult position.
In the UK, if something goes wrong, you have legal protections. Dentists must be insured, regulated, and accountable. You have a right to complain, and the practice is responsible for making things right.
But if you have treatment in another country, especially in places where legal systems are different, you may have no real recourse. If you are unhappy with the results, or if the implants fail, getting compensation can be extremely difficult. Most UK lawyers cannot do much about it.
The price tag might look low up front, but what happens if it goes wrong? Problems such as infections, failed implants, or work that was so poorly done it had to be removed entirely are all possible.
In those cases, we may need to take out failed implants, repair bone damage, treat infection, and start again. The cost ends up being far higher than if the patient had the treatment done properly the first time. In addition to this, some people might find this quite traumatic, especially as they would have been looking forward to it all being done previously.
Having dental implants placed can be a significant investment. Saving a few pounds where it also potentially threatens your health and peace of mind are just not worth it. Let us talk to you about your various options, including payment plans and also help you to understand the significant risks of cutting corners financially by going abroad for them.
Our aim is not to scare you, but to help you make an informed decision. We have seen too many patients in pain from ‘bargains’ that went wrong. You deserve better than that.
Teeth implants are one of the best modern solutions for missing teeth... when done right. They are strong, natural-looking, and can last for decades. But they need careful planning and long-term care.
