NHS Or Private Dentistry?

The options available at our Catford dental clinic.

At The Rushey Green Dental Practice, we are proud to offer our patients a variety of options for receiving dental care. NHS dentistry is available to help you maintain a healthy mouth and cosmetic treatments are also available for those seeking to boost their smile, Finally, we offer treatments such as dental implants and oral surgery for more complex needs

One question that we get asked from time to time is whether a patient should remain as an NHS patient or if it is worth them changing to a private plan. In today’s blog, we take a look at some of the things to consider if you are thinking about this.

How NHS care works

The NHS model is meant to cover the essential parts of dental care. So that means the check-ups, fillings, extractions, simple dentures, and other treatments that keep your mouth healthy and prevent pain or infection. Everything is grouped into bands with fixed fees. If a treatment fits a particular band, that is what you pay, whether you visit us or any other NHS dentist in the UK.

Some people are surprised to find that the NHS does not offer cosmetic dental work. If a treatment is mainly about improving the look of your teeth rather than the health, it will not fall under the NHS umbrella. That includes whitening, veneers, cosmetic bonding, and several other popular treatments.

We also see the effects of demand. Many NHS patients are now waiting longer for routine visits simply because the system is stretched. This is nobody’s fault as such; it is just the reality of how the service works now. For some patients, this is fine. Others find it inconvenient, especially if they want things sorted sooner rather than later.

What does private dentistry bring to the table?

Private dentistry gives more room to move. We can offer longer appointments, quicker access, and a much wider set of treatment options. If someone wants to talk through choices in detail or if it involves aesthetics as well as function, private slots allow for that. People often tell us they appreciate having a calmer pace and the chance to ask whatever they need to without feeling rushed.

The cosmetic side is an obvious difference. Whitening, teeth straightening with Invisalign, cosmetic bonding, high-quality crowns, and other ways of improving the appearance of a smile all sit firmly on the private side. Even where a treatment exists in both systems, the private version may allow for superior materials or a more natural outcome.

Some patients choose private dentistry appointments for practical reasons. They may work shifts or commute long hours and need something that fits around their timetable. Others simply want more choice when deciding how to manage their dental health.

Cost and value

Private dentistry does cost more, and this is a factor for some people. Cost should not be the only factor that you consider though. A lot depends on what you want from your dental care. If you are mainly focused on essential treatment and the basics suit you fine, the NHS may do everything you need. If you want something more tailored, private care often makes that possible.

Some of our patients mix the two systems. They have NHS check-ups and routine work, then choose private treatment if they want something that the NHS cannot provide. This is extremely common and, for many, the most sensible way to approach things.

Choosing what suits you best

There is no single answer that works for everyone. What works for one person might not work for another, and that is completely normal. Your main concern might be cost, or it might be flexibility, or the range of treatments available. You may prefer to keep everything simple and stick with essential NHS care, or you may feel happier with the extra choice and comfort of private appointments.

One thing we always stress is the importance of staying on top of your dental health, whichever route you pick. Regular visits and preventive care will always matter more than whether you attend as an NHS or private patient. Problems are so much easier to solve when they are caught early.

If you are thinking about moving to private dental care for a specific reason but are not sure, why not have a chat with one of our Catford dental team about it. They will be able to answer any questions that you have and enable you to make an informed choice.

For both NHS and private dental appointments, you can still contact us in the normal way; either via the form on our website or by calling the Rushey Green Dental Practice on 020 8314 5066 where you can talk to one of our friendly receptionists.
